Space to Play
When you have a newborn, they generally want to be attached to you day and night the first few months. The time will come when Mama or Papa will want to have a few spare minutes to a) change another child's diaper, b) wash the towering stack of dishes piled in the sink or c) actually go to the bathroom without balancing baby on their lap. From birth to around six months (when baby can sit independently) you'll want some sort of gear to contain and distract the little one. A play mat/baby gym combo offers a cozy, clean place for baby to lay and observe the world around them and practice their motor skills. There are many choices here: Do you want a wooden activity gym or one made of fabric? Do you want lots of stimulation or a more relaxed set up?
For bouncy seats, you'll first want to look at safety: What kind of harness does the seat have? Does it have a cushion to support the tiniest of babies so they don't slump? Next, check out all the bells and whistles. What kinds of toys will keep baby swiping and happy? Some people go for the fully loaded seat, with vibration, lights, and music. Others may prefer a more streamlined seat where baby makes the motion themselves. Keep in mind, you'll want a seat that is easy to disassemble and wash.
Bouncy seats are easy to transport from place to place, while a baby swing is a more permanent entertainment choice. The best approach to choosing a swing is to bring your baby to the store and try it out! Some swings swing front to back, while other sway side to side. Consider whether the swing relies on batteries for power or if it's easily plugged in. Also keep in mind whether the seat offers a variety of reclines or newborn insert cushions so you can use from birth, and if it has easy entrance/exit for times when baby lets you know they want out NOW!

Fisher Price Rainforest Bouncer
I think we all (sort of) remember the first few days after baby is born: existing solely on adrenaline, adoration, and the very, very few hours of sleep. Fisher Price is the go-to company for making it through the new baby stage, when you're battling colic and babies who refuse to sleep or be away from you for even a millisecond. We love the Rainforest Bouncer because it keeps baby entertained (even when you're too exhausted for another game of Peek-a-boo) with a sparkling waterfall feature, tons of tropical creatures, and vibrating seat. Music can be controlled by parent or rewards baby for reaching toys. Parents are consistently impressed with the sturdy design and fun-factor of this bouncer. Your little George or Georgina of the Jungle will probably agree too!
